One day exploring the attic with Grandmother we came upon this box. As we pulled it from under the eaves Grandma got this far away and dreamy look on her face. I asked what was in the box; she just smiled. As we cleared the attic my imagination ran rampant and finally I could contain myself no longer, I had to know what caused that expression so finally I asked what was in the box that brought such memories?
Her smile grew as she related how she hadn't seen that box since after the summer she'd met Grandpa. She described how she and her family had been attending a summer meeting when they met this family whose interests just seemed to be in line with her families. They were awaiting the arrival of their son who was in the service. Well the evening social came and she wore this dress of lace flowers and pink gauze flounces. She, her family and their new friends were seated taking tea when this handsome soldier came through the door and stood looking around and to her amazement started towards the table where she was. She caught herself just staring as this paragon walked towards her, then she realized he was staring too.
He arrived at the empty chair at their table and it was if neither of them could see their parents who were sitting there trying to get a greeting from the "newcomer". The rest of the summer went by in a flash but this dress was worn at the end of season ball as the Grandma and soldier danced the night away. They were married when he'd finished his tour of duty, the dress was lovingly packed and stored, then forgotten for years. But this year we chose to clean the attic after Grandfather's death, Grandma showed me the dream of a dress that was the start of so many memories.
